Intro to Off-Piste
Your first tracks in fresh snow
Skiing powder is one of the best feelings in the mountains, but it needs a different technique. In our off-piste skiing lessons in Saas-Fee, part of our Tech Tasters workshops, your instructor shows you how to stay balanced in deeper snow and how to ski crud and wind-affected snow without fighting it.
We stay below the glacier line, on terrain close to the marked runs, chosen by your instructor for the conditions of the day. Along the way you learn the basics of mountain awareness: the avalanche bulletin, the terrain, and why good decisions matter as much as good technique.
For glacier terrain and bigger backcountry lines you need a certified mountain guide, and we are happy to point you to the right people.
What you will work on
- Powder technique. A balanced, centred stance, even weight on both skis and a smooth rhythm.
- Variable snow. Tactics for crud, wind-packed and heavy snow, so you can ski whatever the mountain gives you.
- Mountain awareness. The avalanche bulletin, terrain and the questions to ask before you leave the piste.
- Take it home. Drills you can keep practising and, for three sessions or more, a personalised video edit.

Who is it for
Strong skiers ready to leave the piste
For strong intermediate and advanced skiers who ski red and black runs confidently and want to explore beyond the groomed slopes. It is ideal if you have tried powder and found it tiring, or if you want to prepare for a freeride trip.
When you are ready for full days in the backcountry, our freeride team at Le Beau Ski runs guided freeride days in the Val d’Anniviers.
Common mistakes we fix
From fighting the snow to floating
Most skiers find powder hard because of the same few habits. Your instructor spots them in the first turns and gives you a clear fix for each one.
- Leaning back. Sitting back feels natural in deep snow but tires your legs fast. You learn to stay centred and let the skis float.
- Weighting one ski. Piste habits put all the weight on the outside ski, which sinks. We work on even weight across both skis.
- Turning too hard. Forcing quick, sharp turns stops you in deep snow. You learn a smooth, bouncing rhythm.
- Stopping to rest. In powder, stopping often makes it harder to start again. We build the fitness and flow to link longer sections.

Off-piste skiing lessons FAQ
What level do I need?
You should ski red and black runs confidently. If you are not there yet, start with our ski carving lessons or mogul skiing lessons.
Do I need avalanche safety equipment?
For this introduction we stay on terrain close to the marked runs. Your instructor explains the equipment you need for true backcountry skiing, such as a transceiver, shovel and probe.
Can we ski on the glacier?
Glacier terrain needs a certified mountain guide. Our off-piste lessons stay below the glacier line, and we can point you to the Saas-Fee mountain guides for glacier days.
What happens if there is no fresh snow?
Off-piste skiing is not only about powder. Your instructor can work on variable snow, or adapt the session into technique work on the piste to prepare you for the next snowfall.
What skis should I use?
Wider all-mountain or freeride skis make learning in powder much easier. Your rental shop can advise.
When do sessions start?
Sessions start at 2.5 hours and can be extended. Mornings after fresh snowfall are best, and the session always depends on conditions and avalanche risk.
What is the difference with freeride guiding?
Intro to Off-Piste is a technique workshop close to the runs. Freeride guiding takes you into the backcountry for a full day with a freeride guide.
