Intro to Ski Racing
Learn how racers ski

Ski racing is the purest test of technique. In our ski racing lessons in Saas-Fee, part of our Tech Tasters workshops, you learn how racers use their edges, their line and their timing to go faster with less effort.

In winter the ski area does not allow private gate courses on the open pistes, so the session focuses on race technique through targeted free-skiing drills: the same early edging, pressure and line choice that racers use between the gates, on runs chosen for the conditions of the day.

Saas-Fee has a long racing tradition, and its glacier is a well-known training ground for race teams. Even if you never plan to race, these skills change the way you ski the rest of the mountain.

What you will work on

  1. Race stance. A strong, forward and centred position that keeps you stable at higher speeds.
  2. Early edging. Starting the turn early and building pressure on the outside ski.
  3. Line and timing. Choosing a round, fast line and getting out of each turn cleanly.
  4. Take it home. Drills you can keep practising and, for three sessions or more, a personalised video edit.

Who is it for
Confident skiers who want speed and precision

For confident skiers who can carve or ski red runs well and want a new challenge. It is popular with teenagers who are thinking about joining a ski club, with parents who want to share the experience with their children, and with adults who have always been curious about racing. You do not need any race experience or race equipment.

If you want structured gate training, our partner race camps at skiracingcamps.ch run dedicated programmes on the Saas-Fee glacier.

Common mistakes we fix
From fast to faster

Most skiers who want more speed are held back by the same few habits. Your instructor spots them in the first runs and gives you a clear fix for each one.

  • Turning too late. Starting the turn below the gate or the fall line means skidding to scrub speed. We work on starting early so the turn is finished before it matters.
  • Leaning into the hill. Banking the whole body takes weight off the outside ski. You learn to angulate so the ski keeps its grip.
  • Sitting back at speed. When speed builds, many skiers drop back. We build a strong, forward stance that stays stable when it gets fast.
  • A straight, skidded line. The shortest line is rarely the fastest. You learn to ski a rounder, cleaner line that carries speed from turn to turn.

Thank you for the lesson, Analia! I booked very last minute and I was very happy that were able to do a 1-hour lesson on a short notice. I had a good time and we did a lot of drills, even though it was only one hour.

I’m an intermediate snowboarder who couldn’t progress any further. I had two amazing sessions with Patrick—he first diagnosed what needed to be improved, then prioritized it so we could focus on the most important parts first. After two sessions, it already helped me, and I now know exactly what I need to fix technically and how to actually do it. Patrick is very punctual, easygoing, and has a great sense of humor. He’s also very patient and repeats things again and again until you get it. Highly recommended. As for the school itself, the whole process was fast and smooth. I knew exactly where to meet and when. I know it may sound silly, but I’ve had some not-so-great experiences with other schools in the past.

Booked lessons for my wife’s first time skiing. Analia was kind, patient, and made sure my wife was comfortable the entire time. We enjoyed our time with Analia so much we booked a second day with her and went up to ski the glacier! Excellent and knowledgeable teachers at this school, can’t wait to go back.

Mila’s first ski lesson couldn’t have gone better! At just five years old, we didn’t know what to expect, but Patrick connected with her straight away and made her feel completely at ease. He turned it into such a fun, confidence-building experience. We’re so grateful and would highly recommend!

I booked a private snowboard lesson for my son from Ski Zenit / Bespoke and it was an excellent experience. Communication around the scheduling and rescheduling was very easy and convenient, the team is approachable and responsive. That was just the start, we then got to meet the teacher, Patrick. Simply fantastic, Patrick is able to communicate with children, putting him at their level, gain their trust and truly encourage them to move forward. Our son, 10 years, really advanced these 2 days with Patrick and still proudly talks about him. We will be back!

Good to know
Ski racing lessons FAQ

Do I need race skis?

No. Any well-tuned piste ski works for this taster. Your instructor will give you advice if you want to take racing further.

What level do I need?

You should be comfortable on red runs and ideally already making carved turns. If you are not there yet, start with our ski carving lessons.

Will we ski through gates?

In winter the ski area does not allow private gate courses on the open pistes, so we work on race technique with free-skiing drills. For gate training, have a look at our partner race camps.

Is this suitable for children?

It is ideal for confident young skiers and teenagers. For younger children, tell us their level when you book and we will advise.

When do sessions start?

Sessions start at 2.5 hours and can be extended. Morning sessions start by 10:30, when the snow is firm and the slopes are quiet.

Where do we meet?

Usually at the Alpin Express gondola, confirmed when you book. Look for our Bespoke Snowsports sign and our instructors in all-black uniforms.

Private or small group?

Book privately for the most feedback per run, or as a group of up to five people with a similar level. A little friendly competition goes a long way.

How do I book?

Click Book to see live availability and prices, choose your date, time and group size, and pay securely online.
